In 2000, a study appointed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) indicated that 85% of business respondents which included companies of all sizes and orientations that they had been victimized by at least one computer-related crime in the previous year. These crimes ranged from problems of epidemic proportions, such as virus infection, to less prevalent but still serious problems like Web site defacement, denial of service attacks, financial fraud, sabotage, and network break-ins. The financial losses associated with computer crime more than doubled between 1999 and 2000 to reach $265 million.
