To enhance the effective of Virtual Private Network (VPN), we can use Dynamic Multipoint Virtual Private Network (DMVPN) to do so. Thus DMVPN is for enhancement of the VPN configuration process of Cisco IOS-based routers.


So do you know what Virtual Private Network is?








A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the Internet to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. It aims to avoid an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can be used by only one organization.

It encapsulates data transfers using a secure cryptographic method between two or more networked devices which are not on the same private network so as to keep the transferred data private from other devices on one or more intervening local or wide area networks. There are many different classifications, implementations, and uses for VPNs.

Advantages of VPN

An ideal VPN can be significantly advantageous to an organization. It can,

  • implement advance security measure
  • lessen operational costs
  • lessen travel time and transportation expenses for distant members
  • enhance productivity
  • shorten network topology
  • offer global networking prospects
  • offer compatibility with broadband networking
  • revert with quicker Return On Investment (ROI)





DMVPN prevents the need for pre-configured (static) IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) peers in crypto-map configurations feature of Cisco IOS allows greater scalability over previous IPsec configurations.




An IPsec tunnel between two Cisco routers may be created on an as needed basis. Tunnels may be created between a spoke router and a hub router (VPN headend), or between spokes. This greatly alleviates the need for the hub to route data between spoke networks, as was common in a non-fully meshed frame relay topology.

DMVPN supports distributed applications including: data, voice, and video, with QoS. All of this can be done in a secure IPSec VPN tunnel over an Internet connection.  
The only change is the IP address of the GRE Tunnel.  The spoke uses dynamic discovery of IPSec tunnel end-points, (other spokes). No IPSec static configuration for each spoke.
Beside that DMVPN supports multipoint GRE tunneling you can run VoIP, Video, and Multicast services across your secure DMVPN link.

As the growth popularity of the technology information, many innovations have to been done to make sure you won’t be kicking out from the society. Thus the businesses now are tending to expand their networks to many areas. Before the VPN, they are established some less advanced networks. But after the VPN being created, most businesses switch to VPN from other because the VPN is more convenient and secure. They can transfer much information with higher secure standard. Beside that with VPN, those virtual team which didn’t meet but still works as a team can communicate better which each member.

Thus DMVPN which is simple, secure and low cost that enhance VPN act as an important role. It’s a cost effective and secure communication for branch offices. It reduces the cost and enables direct contact such as voice between branch to branch in a business.
DMVPN also reduces deployment complexity by offers a zero touch configuration, dramatically reducing the deployment complexity in VPN.
On the other hand, DMVPN do also improve the resiliency of a business. It does prevent disruptions of business critical applications and services by incorporating routing with standards based IPsec technology.
